Blue & Orange Boys Nursery

Boy’s Nursery Room

With our first, we definitely wanted to know if we were having a boy or a girl. I did not have a preference on the gender, I primarily wanted to know so we could decorate the room and buy baby clothes!

We had a great idea that we would try to keep the gender from our family and friends…well considering we started painting furniture and accent walls in the nursery, the secret did not last long!

Any new parent will know, there are A LOT of expenses when having a baby. We did our best to utilize hand me down furniture and our creative and building skills to design the nursery.

Our biggest investment in the room was custom drapery and a rocking chair. To any new parents, these are MUST haves!  Drapes need to block out any and all light. For the rocking chair, you will likely be spending a lot of days and night in it – for us, a chair that reclined was also ideal.

Andrew built the shelves above the change table, using Restoration Hardware Kids shelves as inspiration. Each shelf is a varying length, with unique trim.  His talent and skill never ceases to amaze me!

The dresser was given to us as a hand me down. It was great quality dresser, but in an outdated wood stained finish. A simple enough fix was to paint it and build a box to sit on top for the change pad to sit in.

We used fun geometric textiles and shapes throughout the room – in the pillows, drape fabric, and accent wall.  Geometric pieces add fun elements and pops of colour to the room, but are also suitable for a baby, child, or teenager’s room. This was important to me.  Custom pillows, window cushions, and drapes are an investment and you want to ensure the fabric selection has longevity to it, won’t out-date quickly, and the child can grow with. Jackson is now almost 5 years old and we still love the drapes.

For the striped accent wall, we used painters tape to create a template of lines and then painted in between the lines. If you want an even easier way to do this, you can create a design using painters tape – and then just leave the tape on the wall!
